Cobram is a town located in Victoria, Australia, with a rich history that dates back to the 19th century. The area was originally inhabited by the Yorta Yorta and Bangerang people, who were known for their hunting, fishing, and gathering of food.

The first European to explore the area was Hamilton Hume in 1824, followed by Captain Charles Sturt in 1838. The town was established in the late 1800s, as a result of the construction of the railway line, which brought new settlers and businesses to the area.

One of the key industries in the early years of Cobram was agriculture, with many farmers establishing orchards, vineyards, and dairy farms in the surrounding area. The town also had a booming timber industry, with logs being floated down the Murray River to nearby sawmills.

Cobram’s location on the Murray River also made it an important transport hub, with steamboats and paddle steamers plying the river to transport goods and passengers to and from the town. The river was also a key source of fish, and the town developed a reputation for its smoked cod and other Murray River delicacies.

During World War II, Cobram was used as a training base for the Australian Army, with troops stationed in the town to undergo intensive bush and jungle warfare training. The town also hosted Italian prisoners of war, who were used for farm labour throughout the area.

In the post-war years, Cobram began to grow rapidly, with new developments and businesses springing up in the town. The 1960s saw the opening of the Cobram District Hospital, as well as the establishment of the iconic Murray Goulburn Co-operative dairy.

Today, Cobram is a thriving town that boasts a rich history, as well as a vibrant community and economy. The town is home to a number of popular festivals and events, including the Cobram Agricultural Show, the Cobram Italian Festival, and the popular Cobram Christmas Twilight Market.

Cobram is also known for its stunning natural beauty, with the Murray River running through the heart of the town and providing a range of recreational opportunities for locals and visitors alike. The town is surrounded by picturesque orchards, vineyards, and farmland, as well as a range of national parks and reserves.

In conclusion, the history of Cobram is a fascinating one, with the town playing an important role in the development of the region over the past century. Today, Cobram is a vibrant, thriving community, with a rich cultural heritage and a bright future ahead.
